Animal Heaven: What Happens to Pets After Death and How Animals Continue to Guide Us Spiritually

For many of us, our first experience with death comes through the loss of a beloved pet. I still remember when my childhood cat, Smokey, passed away. My father dug a small grave in our backyard, and my friends and I held a heartfelt funeral procession. We wrapped Smokey in flannel, laid her gently into the earth, and I read a passage from the Bible before my father covered the grave. Years later, my father still said it was one of the most sincere funerals he had ever witnessed.

Experiences like these shape how we begin to understand love, grief, and the spiritual connection we share with animals.

Do Animals Have Souls?

One of the questions I am asked most often is what happens to our pets after they die. From a spiritual perspective, animals absolutely have souls. Just like humans, they continue their journey after death and cross what many refer to as the Rainbow Bridge.

While human souls eventually return to the upper realm, animals inhabit what shamans call the lower world. This realm is deeply connected to nature, instinct, healing, and spiritual guidance.

When I teach my Introduction to Shamanism class, one of the first guided journeys we take is to meet each student’s power animal. Journeying to the lower realm is often easier for beginners, and animals tend to help people feel safe and connected as they begin spiritual work.

Within the lower realm are different energetic levels:

  • Level 1: The Stone People — connected to the elemental energies of earth, fire, air, and water

  • Level 2: The Plant People — plants, trees, and elemental nature beings

  • Level 3: The Animal People — where most pets and spirit animals reside

  • Level 4: The Water People — dolphins, whales, and highly intelligent aquatic beings

Understanding these levels helps us recognize that animals continue evolving spiritually even after leaving the physical world.

Communicating With Animals Through Soul Connection

Animals communicate differently than humans, but they are deeply intuitive and spiritually aware. Through a soul-to-soul connection, it is possible to communicate with pets both during their lives and after they pass.

I often find that animals open most easily when they feel relaxed and safe. One simple technique is brushing or petting them until they become calm and receptive. This creates an energetic opening similar to a meditative state.

I first experienced this form of communication with my mother’s cat, Pumpkin, who lived to be seventeen years old. During my mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, I spent long periods brushing Pumpkin because I sensed she missed my mother deeply. Over time, I began receiving mental images from her and realized we were communicating through pictures and emotion rather than words.

Experiences like this remind us that our relationships with animals extend far beyond the physical.

How Pets Continue Watching Over Us

Our pets do not stop loving us after they pass. In many cases, they continue watching over us and even help guide us toward future animal companions when we are ready.

After my daughter adopted a bonded pair of cats and had such a wonderful experience, I decided to adopt a bonded pair myself. A local rescue connected my husband and me with two brothers, Frank and Joe. We instantly fell in love with them, and they became an important part of our family. Looking back, I believe the animals we loved before helped guide those new souls into our lives.

Sometimes pets continue making their presence known in remarkable ways. After we moved to Tucson, our dachshund Gidget loved visiting our neighbors and their Pomeranian, Teddy. About a year after Gidget passed, our neighbor Rick was photographing flowers in his yard when he discovered what appeared to be Gidget in one of the photos. We were deeply moved by the experience and felt comforted knowing her spirit was still nearby.

Rick himself passed unexpectedly earlier this year, and I often wonder if he and Gidget are still together on the other side.

The Spiritual Bond Between Humans and Animals

Animals are far more than companions. They are teachers, healers, protectors, and spiritual partners who walk beside us throughout our lives. They comfort us during grief, teach us unconditional love, and often remain spiritually connected long after they leave the physical world.

The more we open ourselves to this connection, the more clearly we can feel their guidance and presence.

If you are grieving the loss of a pet or want to deepen your spiritual connection with animals, I encourage you to spend quiet time with them, remain open to signs, and trust the bond you share.

I would also love to hear your stories and questions about animal communication and the spiritual journey of our beloved pets.
