Crystal Visions: Exploring the Meaning of Dreams and Nightmares
Dreams carry a mysterious beauty. They weave together our desires, fears, and hidden truths, often leaving us with only fragments when we wake. How often have you opened your eyes to a lingering feeling, a half-remembered hope, or the echo of a voice that felt achingly familiar? Dreams are not always fully ours to control. Sometimes they are glimpses from the soul, reminding us which visions are worth holding onto and which are ready to be released.
Whenever I reflect on dreams, I am reminded of Stevie Nicks’ haunting lyrics in Crystal Visions. Like her, I have always felt the pull of the dream world. Since childhood, dreams and nightmares have been a significant part of my life. Some were so powerful that I would wake abruptly, needing comfort from my husband. Over time, I learned that dreams can be changed, and that they can offer profound insight when approached with intention.
Do We All Dream?
My husband often says he does not dream, but science tells us otherwise. According to Kendra Cherry, MSEd, “Just about everyone dreams every time they sleep, and those dreams can be fascinating, exciting, terrifying, or just plain weird. Most of those dreams are forgotten within minutes of waking.”
Most people dream in color, though some dream in black and white. Some can even control the direction of their dreams, almost as if they were writing a script. This ability is called lucid dreaming, and while it takes practice, it begins with paying closer attention to what we dream each night.
How to Begin Changing Your Dreams
If you want to better understand or even shift your dreams, start with a journal. Write down your dreams every morning as soon as you wake. This practice is especially valuable after nightmares, because they often reveal unresolved emotional patterns.
As you collect entries, begin to look for recurring symbols, places, or people. Over time, these patterns create a map of your inner world. Once you recognize them, you may be able to consciously influence your dreams, changing their outcome or energy.
Shamanic and Metaphysical Perspectives
Different spiritual traditions offer unique approaches to dreams, but in shamanism, dreams are not just random stories. They are pathways to the soul. Shamans understand that the body stores unresolved emotional pain, which can manifest as disturbing dreams or nightmares. Through guided practices, this stored energy can be released, leading to more peaceful sleep.
In the Akashic Records, dreams are understood in the context of soul contracts and past karma. By examining your record, you can uncover the root cause of recurring dreams and begin to resolve them on a deeper level. Though this work takes time, addressing the source often leads to lasting relief.
The Goal of Dreamwork
The purpose of dreamwork is not to control every image but to move toward greater peace. Nightmares can point us toward what needs healing, while recurring dreams can reveal hidden truths about our life path. By keeping a dream journal, working with shamanic techniques, or exploring the Akashic Records, you can begin to release unresolved issues and step into more restful, restorative sleep.
Ultimately, dreams are invitations. They invite us to listen, to heal, and to grow.
