Understanding Divination: A Sacred Gift for Spiritual Insight
Have you ever searched for the word divination online and felt unsettled by how it’s described?
Google defines it as “the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means.” Wikipedia adds that divination is “an attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of a magic ritual or practice.”
Both definitions use terms like supernatural and magic, words that often mislead people new to spirituality into believing divination is dark or dangerous. The truth is far different. For practitioners like myself, divination is not about the occult; it is about expanding understanding, deepening connection with Spirit, and receiving guidance rooted in love and service.
What Divination Really Is
Divination is simply the practice of gaining information or wisdom from the spirit world through specific tools or techniques. One of the simplest forms is using a pendulum, which I teach in my Introduction to Shamanism class.
When I perform a clearing, whether for a person or a home, I often use the pendulum along with powerful allies from the spirit world. I call upon Otorango, the jaguar, a high-level spirit animal, to help gather lingering energies known as discarnates, entities that remain in the middle world instead of crossing to the upper world. Then, I invite Archangel Michael to open the Rainbow Bridge so these souls can move forward peacefully.
If Archangel Michael is part of this sacred process, how could divination possibly be “supernatural” or “dark”? Even discarnates are rarely evil. They are often fragments of souls separated by trauma or sudden death. Helping these pieces reunite and transition is an act of compassion, not magic.
The Gifts Behind Divination
Divination is one of the gifts God gives us. Like any spiritual gift, it requires training, discernment, and humility. Some practitioners have the ability to perceive information through touch, known as psychometry. Others experience intuitive sight (clairvoyance), hearing (clairaudience), or feeling (clairsentience).
I personally receive messages through clairsentience first, a strong physical or emotional knowing, which I then translate into words or writing. Over the years, I’ve also had intuitive experiences connected to family and loved ones. I sensed when both of my grandmothers were near death, allowing me to spend precious time with one of them in her final month. I’ve also known when pets were preparing to cross over. These moments remind me that spiritual awareness is simply part of how we are made.
Dispelling the Myths
It is important to remember that divination and spiritual work are not dark arts. Unfortunately, a small number of individuals misuse these practices, but they are exceptions. Most spiritualists work with light, faith, and integrity. You can quickly discern whether a practitioner is trustworthy by how you feel in their presence; true light work always feels calm, grounded, and respectful.
Divination, when practiced with proper training and intention, is a sacred means of communication and service. It helps us honor the gifts we were born with and use them to bring clarity and healing to others.
Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts
Divination is not about predicting the future; it’s about understanding the present and deepening connection with Spirit. If you feel called to explore your intuitive gifts, I encourage you to find a class or mentor who can guide you safely.
Learning to work with your abilities brings immense joy and alignment with your soul’s purpose. As I often remind my students, we are all born with gifts. Understanding and using them is part of our soul contract and our service to the universe.
